June News and Updates

Finished another great year of Prevention Education!

The Peace House prevention team uses several proven, research-based strategies to drive our mission to end domestic violence and sexual assault. Here, we know that education, especially at a young age, is a key primary prevention tool.

Primary prevention is about stopping violence before it starts by changing the conditions that allow it to happen in the first place. Some might say, going "upstream" to intervene with people at highest risk for causing or experiencing harm. Primary prevention seeks to prevent individuals from becoming victims or perpetrators of domestic violence and/or sexual violence by using strategies that create healthy relationships and environments. For example, our 3 Strands curriculum teaches interactive, age-appropriate lessons covering online safety, healthy relationships, boundaries, and exploitation awareness.

Interventions that occur when the risk of violence is already there are called ‘early intervention’ or secondary prevention. Doing something about violence that is currently happening is called ‘response’ or tertiary prevention. Many programs and services focus on addressing relationship and sexual violence from a secondary and tertiary perspective, and fewer resources are dedicated to engaging true primary prevention—ending violence before it starts. At Peace House, we present on all three forms of prevention.

In 2026, retention is a focus for the prevention team, measuring recognition of basic body safety concepts over time. Questions for our 1st - 5th grade students include prompts such as: "Raise your hand if you remember what a trusted adult is!" The increase in retention shows the importance of recurring education sessions for thorough recognition and recall of child abuse prevention topics.
*The graph above measures retention rates of key body safety concepts, demonstrating the importance of recurring primary prevention education from 1st - 5th grade in school settings.

Leadership Park City Mural Project

Park City Leadership Class 32 has announced its class project – painting murals throughout Summit County. The Mural Project is a community-driven mural series meant to reflect local values, highlight nonprofit work, and make public art more accessible across the county.

The leadership class chose artist Anna Nizhoni’s proposal for the 2026 group project. She says the Summit County mural project is a community-powered public art effort. Nizhoni, who shared she is a survivor of domestic violence, described much of her early life as shaped by people who made her feel small or discouraged her from speaking freely. Murals, she said, offer a completely different experience.
“The appeal of public art and murals for me is that it’s this opportunity to not feel small and to really take up space for the first time in my life,” Nizhoni said. “To share my voice loudly and share my visions in this bright, big, beautiful way.”

Peace House was the first recipient of one of the murals, and beyond excited to share this beautiful artwork with staff, survivors and more.
