Event Details

SESSION 1. Getting Started: How to Promote Health and Well-being During the Teen Years Objective Parents will learn about Guiding Good Choices and the Social Development Strategy, a way to strengthen family bonds with your preteen and promote healthy behavior. You’ll learn about teen substance use—the most common teen behavior problem—and ways to protect against it and other common concerns. You’ll also learn how to hold a family meeting to plan family fun and strengthen family bonding.

SESSION 2. Setting Guidelines: How to Develop Healthy Beliefs and Clear Standards Objectives Parents will learn how to develop clear family guidelines about substance use and communicate them at a family meeting. You can use the same process to set guidelines for other behaviors you care about.

SESSION 3. Managing Conflict: How to Deal With Your Anger in a Positive Way Objectives Parents will learn why it’s important to manage family conflict. You’ll learn and practice two skills: Controlling anger and expressing anger in a positive way. You’ll also learn how to hold a family meeting on managing conflict.

SESSION 4. Avoiding Trouble: How to Say No, Keep Your Friends, and Still Have Fun Objectives Parents and teens will learn Refusal Skills so children can resist peer influences to use substances or engage in other risky behaviors. You’ll continue to practice the skills at a family meeting and in other settings.

SESSION 5. Involving Everyone: How to Strengthen Family Bonds Objectives Parents will learn how to increase preteen involvement in family life, which strengthens family bonds. As you increase involvement, you’ll also teach important skills your preteen will need as an adult. If you have more than one child, you can use the same strategies to increase their involvement in the family, too.
