April 2019 Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April 2019 Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Contrary to expectations that public discourse inspired by the #Metoo would reduce sexual assault, sexual assaults are rising. Studies in Utah suggest that one in six women and one in 32 men experience rape or attempted rape during their lifetime, according to Public Health Indicator Based Information System (IBIS). Nationally one in five women and one in 67 men have experienced rape or attempted rape in their lifetime. Rape is the only violent crime that is higher than the national average.
Utah state government spent more than $92 million on offenders and only $569,000 to prevent sexual violence. Fortunately, all of us can create and promote safe environments. We can intervene to stop concerning behavior, promote and model healthy attitudes and relationships, and believe survivors and assist them in finding resources.
National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) is promoting an “I ask for consent” campaign, this April. Most sexual assaults are perpetrated by an acquaintance. This strategy helps clarify boundaries and respect The “I ask for consent” focuses on a clear concrete example of what it takes to end sexual harassment, abuse, and assault.
